Midwifery Station (CSPS)
current project 2025/26Midwifery station (CSPS)
The original plan was to initially expand only two rooms of the midwifery station in 2025 and thus start operations. Over the course of the year, it became clear that we would have to construct the entire building, particularly for hygiene reasons and in accordance with the requirements of the Burkina Faso Ministry of Health. Despite the help of the villagers and a significant reduction in costs as a result, we are still €11,500 short of the amount needed to complete the project.
Building completion:
- €31,500 for the construction of the building (as of 1 January 2026) 63%
Outstanding remaining costs: €11,500 (as of 1 January 2026)
Thanks to the energetic assistance of the villagers, we were able to complete the shell of the building in 2025 at a cost of only €20,000. The remaining costs for completing the building amount to €11,500. We are currently hoping to receive €10,000 in support from a foundation. The project application was submitted at the beginning of December 2025 and we are currently awaiting a response. If the response is positive, we expect to be able to complete the building in 2026 and open the midwifery station (CSPS).
The finished building will comprise the following rooms:
- Medical consultation and treatment room
- Delivery room
- Rooms for newborns and mothers
- Office or room for nursing staff
- Small storage room
- Small pharmacy room for dispensing medication
- Covered lounge and waiting area
- Toilets and cooking area outside
The following are not yet included in the construction:
- Installation of solar panels and power supply for the building
- Pump system and supply of running water to the building (a hand-operated pump well is available next to the building)
Corresponding extensions would have to be carried out in subsequent projects.
Interior design:
- €5,500 for interior fittings (as of 1 January 2026) 100%
The cost of basic interior furnishings for counselling services and birth support amounts to approximately €5,500. These costs are already fully covered by the donations we collected in 2025.
The interior furnishings include the following purchases:
- Furniture for the waiting area, the counselling room, the delivery area and the office
- A delivery bed and two beds for mothers and newborns after delivery
- Medical equipment for gynaecological and medical examinations
- Medical equipment for delivery support
- A gas-powered refrigerator for cooling medicines
Planned services offered by the CSPS
The planned health centre will be run as a CSPS (Centre de santé et de promotion sociale). In rural areas, CSPSs provide a range of basic health services. Once fully operational, the CSPS will offer the following services:
- Standard preventive care for pregnant women
- Standard care during births, which can be provided by midwives
- Standard services for children under five years of age
Since the introduction of the ‘Graduité’ policy in 2016, these services have been free of charge under Burkinabe national law and are offered free of charge at the CSPS.
In addition, other health services are offered for a minimal fee or financed by a social fund set up by the villagers. These additional services include:
- General health services roughly equivalent to those provided by a German general practitioner, which may be provided by nurses in Burkina Faso
- Dispensing of essential medicines in a small pharmacy
Planned staffing for the CSPS
The CSPS would probably need around 10 employees to run at full capacity. At least 4.5 employees are needed for an initial minimum service offering. Staffing costs will primarily be financed by the town of Ouarégou and the district of Garango. Preliminary discussions have taken place in recent years. As the opening is now within reach, we are currently (January 2026) in the process of clarifying the financing with a concrete estimate of personnel costs. This will determine how many employees we will be able to hire when we open the CSPS.
Reports on the progress of the project
Midwife advice center – completion of the foundation – 24.01.2025
The foundations of the midwife station were completed on 24 January 2025. If everything goes according to plan, we will have completed the outer walls, the roof and two rooms by the beginning of March 2025. We are being supported in the construction work by the villagers and the [ U.D.O. ] association. Completion of the shell with roof, doors and windows
27.01.2025 - 03.05.2025 Completion of the exterior and interior walls The construction workers completed the exterior and interior walls as well as the entrance area of the building in just over a month. To ensure that the building is stable, iron girders were embedded in all the walls above and below the windows. This is also the reason why all the interior walls were completed. Due to the resulting increase in construction costs, our funds were no longer sufficient for the roof and windows. So from March onwards, construction was at a standstill, well timed with Ramadan. During Ramadan in...
